That said, I'm really surprised that there are no resort towns from Colorado or Utah on that list. Park City, Vail, Aspen, and Boulder are huge $$$$.


The population of that zip code is 650. The ranking is based only on sales, so perhaps there were only a few dozen sales.

Starts with a 1/2 million dollar condo and there are a bunch around $10 million, even one listed at $35 million.

What everyone who complains about DC as a capital vs other countries' capitals don't get is that DC is *not* the financial, entertainment, or technology center of the US; it's just the governing epicenter. This is in contrast to most other countries, where the capital is also the most important city in the country on every other measure.

In that sense, the US is much more diversified than other countries. It's a good thing that our industry centers are spread across the country. It's not an indication that DC is somehow inferior to other capitals; it's just a completely different animal.

Where is DC?
So, the wealth is not in DC or the close-in suburbs. But if you live in Loudoun county, DCUM sees you as a loser who couldn't afford DC.


People are much more highly leveraged in CA. Even the rich. Lots of monthly payments, with very little in the bank after all bills are paid. Most people I know in CA lease their cars.

Seriously.

I remember reading a statistic that the average Californian has a mortgage more than 5x their annual income, whereas the DC area (and most of the US on average) borrows only 3x their annual income. I absolutely believe this. It was a really interesting data set, as it examined the borrowing practices in all the MSAs across the country. I will try to track it down. CA and FL borrow A LOT more than the average U.S. homeowner.

better weather though I totally agree, DC is expensive but not as insane, there is affordable housing even in its priciest parts thanks to the still healthy supply or fugly old housing stock. I have a friend living in one of these overrated CA towns in a totally fugly ranch less than 1500 sq.ft even worse than DC metro famous shit shacks and it's nearing 1.5 mil for that tiny POS. No thanks.


The weather in CA is better on the coast, but most of CA is not on the coast. I'll take four seasons over baking desert any day.


I love the weather there but the extreme weather is really scary. Hot in the day, sometimes freezing at night - Fires, mudslides, earthquakes - after awhile it gets to be too much. When we lived out there our kids went to school with a family whose house slipped off a canyon during the rainy/mudslide season.
