If you have people in your house that abuse drugs or alcohol, it can draw unwanted spirits. Set up and altar, light candles and pray aloud until they go.

Honestly, we have had periodic problems with ghosts and or dark spirits. I think they are drawn into the energy in our house or to me and some family members who are very empathic. So yes it's ongoing maintenance to keep them clear.

I wonder if other people have ghosts or spirits and they just don't ear or see them like we do. Has anyone never had uninvited spiritual dwellers?

Hi OP! I do house blessings and cleansings several times a month. I am a minister. But you can absolutely do it yourself. Priests and ministers don't have super powers. How you do it depends on your faith path. I typically use white sage. Simply walk into each room of your home and say whatever prayer or affirmation resonates with you. The Lord's Prayer is very powerful, even for non-Christians, surprisingly. It's old and the words have so much positive energy and power associated with them.

You can also just ask that only things working for your families highest and best be present in the home. If you are having difficulty with an unwelcome spirit, you might want to ask for help. Especially if you are afraid. But you don't need anyone to do it. You have dominion over your space.

House blessings don’t have anything to do with exorcisms! They are simply to pray for the inhabitants of the home, to express thankfulness for the home, etc.

Not Lutheran any more (a UU member who thinks UU people are way too precious) but was raised Lutheran, and the Reformation basically did away with the idea you need an intercessor even for sacraments. I know the Catholic Church has more sacraments than Lutherans, but I'll bet blessing a house is not one of them.

A house blessing by a clergy person is a joyful, meaningful occasion. You are praying in union with others for the well-being of all in the home. And, at least in our tradition, it is followed by a feast!

That said, you can also pray for the well being of your home and its inhabitants any time you want.

Either clergy or lay people can use holy water, but I don’t have one of those cool horse tail brushes the clergy use to spray it around or the authority of apostolic succession!

I am Hindu. I have an alter at my house and I pray every single day. I can call a priest to bless my house if I want, but I can do the same myself too.

Priests are just religious workers and facilitators. They are not holier than you or have a direct connection or right to God. My relationship with God is my own. My soul is part of the divine soul. I need no one but myself, I need no prayers and chants but my own humble appeal from the heart.

There is no hierarchy between a devotee and God. It is a direct connection.

In A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the grandmother (Austrian Catholic) brings over a vial of holy water to sprinkle in the corners of the apartment to keep away curses.

I think only a member of the clergy can bless a house (shouldn't a minister or a nun be able to do this as well as a priest?).

What you can do is pray to God to surround yourself, your family and your home with his love.

I also keep a evil eye inside and bhagwan mirrors outside.
