Second the recommendation to go to Child's Play (Arlington, Connecticut Ave, and maybe a third location?) and talk to them. They are amazing.

We pretty much stick to the classics:
Rummikub
Monopoly
Life
Sorry
Uno
We have a Trivial Pursuit family edition, but the kids' topics were too easy.

Great games, but probably not the best choice unless you are a pretty serious gamer. Also, I would not play Diplomacy with anyone that I was trying to build a relationship of mutual trust and affection with. (Diplomacy is a great strategy game with a heavy negotiation element or perhaps a negotiation game with a strong strategic element, but it also features a lot of betrayal. If you can laugh about it or just roll with it, but I have seen it really mess with some friendships.)

In A Pickle is great for all ages and for kids who like Apples to Apples it's a similar feel.

Last Letter is currently our family favorite (I have one in high school and one in middle school). You can change the rules every round, which keeps things interesting. It's also very fast-paced, so you aren't playing forever unless you want to.

Exploding Kittens is just fun, although my kids get a little hypercompetitive with that one sometimes.

them and trying some me out.
