I agree that going to a catholic school will improve her chances. But I disagree that a score of 1420 is good enough. While there may be some students who have been admitted with scores in that range, they probably had other hooks. 1420 is on the low end. I would work hard to bring that score up to closer to the high 1400s (or around 33 for ACT).

Another thing that ND cares a lot about is class rank...top 10%. With that GPA, she's probably in the top 10%.

Class rigor? I understand that math is not your DD's strength, but if she took all of the hardest classes in the other subjects, then she's probably ok in that area.

The essays are going to be really important too.

Ahhhh, sometimes.

Don't jump all over me but this REALLY is determined by what D3 and which D1 schools we are talking about.

While the coaching change is an indicator that the intended D3 program might not be perfect, there are lots of big state schools that don't even have more than intramural VB.

THIS! She can still play and she will also have a great team and good coaches. UMD, UVA, etc.. have club programs that are fantastic.

OP, we also have older kids who were recruited to play sports at D3 colleges, and, a youngest child who's also being recruited and is now waiting to hear on her ED application. You've gotten a lot of great advice and perspective here from other posters. I will just add that I understand what a curve ball this is for your daughter, but she sounds like a great girl who will create some terrific options for herself. I'm guessing her resilience might come, in part at least, from playing sports. And maybe also from having a mom like you who rolls with the punches. Best of luck to you both!

Thanks everyone for the feedback. She is coming out of this change in plans really well! I am seeing resilience but also what I think is a sigh of relief. Her siblings are college athletes so she knows for better and worse what she will be missing. She is meeting with her college counselor today with a list of schools/programs. Math is a relative weakness (680) because I think she breezed through Algebra in 7th grade without ever really learning it. She will likely just have to put together her best applications.

I would add St. Louis University to her list. It would be an excellent safety for her. She would be right at the 75% percentile for SLU. Very good Catholic University with a vibrant campus culture.

But this young lady feels the opposite so just let her go do what she wants...

Tell her not to underestimate the smaller schools too. My child is at a smaller Catholic college in their Honors Program and really enjoys having so many service opportunities not just accessible but also encouraged. She had the stats for a prestigious school but truly felt like excelling in a less intense environment would be a better fit.

Apply widely. Encourage her to put stellar effort into her dream schools, a few of course, but then keep applying to more -- like 10 total, incase, so she ends up with choices

I am curious about the initial school that she wanted to play VB. Did she have to apply Early Decision for the early commitment from the school? How and when did she find out the the coach was leaving and that the new coach wouldn't include her on their roster?

Marquette is an excellent suggestion. St. Louis University too.

+1, plus midwesterners are extremely friendly. My daughter went to school in Minnesota & couldn't believe how outwardly nice the community was.

What about Marquette? My daughter just got her acceptance letter and is seriously considering it- it’s a very good school, Milwaukee is a really cool city and I think it would be a comfortable, familiar environment for someone coming from a Catholic high school. I think it attracts the same types of kids who like ND/BC/Nova.
