And honestly it looks like this was in response to the BS doing better and opening up to all. They had to figure out how to do more than produce suzie homemaker badges.

Girl Scouts releases new badges in environmental stewardship, space science, robotics, and more to help girls create positive change in their communities—and beyond.

They cover a variety of topics, including outdoor skills, STEM, life skills, entrepreneurship, etc. It is up to an individual troop of girls (and their leaders) to decide what to pursue.

I loved Girl Scouts and was very involved through hs even.
On the contrary I don't think we encourage the girls enough. Where are the riflery, hunting, business administration, geology, aviation, sailing, chemistry merit badges and courses for the GS?
I take it you haven't spent much time looking at the merit badges available in GSA.

They should take this as a win and become the Scouts or Scouts of America. GS can give BS some tips on running a better product line and BS can give GS tips on better merit badges.
Because the GS badges seriously suck. Childcare, needlecraft, sewing, and folk dancing, ffs?

I'm married to an Eagle Scout. He can sew really well and learned through BSA. It's a needed skill for everyone. He hems our daughter's pants as well as my drapes! Don't put down sewing. It's taught in the military too.
I don't see the issue with childcare or folk dancing either, but they should be offered to both sexes.
