I don't DIY clean wool rugs as most households cannot do as good of a job as professional cleaners (for instance, use ice cold water, multiple shampoos and squeeze, etc.). If I get a spill or a stain, I just quickly spot clean it with water or a very weak soap solution. Most things disappear after that.

We faced the same situtation. Both designers we hired suggested different area rugs but similar color scheme. We had to get one 10' x 12' and one 11' x 14'.... area rugs are freaking expensive. That'as all I got to say about that.

For our dining, living, and foyer area that are separate but all visible from each other, ee did three different Ballard rugs in the same pattern but different colors. 2 shades of blue for the smaller ones and a shade of bluish green for the large living room one. They seem to complement each other well enough.

I have Orientals everywhere, and three kids under eight. There's nothing we haven't cleaned off the rugs. Wool is hair, you can clean off pretty much anything.

We also have wool rugs. Get them cleaned once a year or DIY cleaning them. Synthetics will be trashed though.

I'd like a run under our table, but our 6 year old still spills stuff pretty frequently. I'd say we wipe up milk from the floor at least once a week. I should just wait to get a rug, right?

Never use the same rugs. Never. It practically screams that you're clueless and shopped from a catalog.

Use two rugs in complementary patterns or similar color scheme. In my great room, I have a large plush Heriz under the couch and armchairs, and a thinner Turkmen under the dining table and chairs. They both have a muted red/orange palette and work well together.
