Never use the same rugs. Never. It practically screams that you're clueless and shopped from a catalog.
Use two rugs in complementary patterns or similar color scheme. In my great room, I have a large plush Heriz under the couch and armchairs, and a thinner Turkmen under the dining table and chairs. They both have a muted red/orange palette and work well together.
