If you homeschool, why does he need a 504? Who approves it?Anonymous wrote:My son is in AAP - 3rd grade (we keep him at his home school instead of sending him to the center.) He is a 2e kid (gifted with multiple conditions.) I just got him a 504 plan.
I am understanding that IEP’s are difficult to get in fcps. Are 504’s difficult to obtain also for an AAP kid?Anonymous wrote:My son is in AAP - 3rd grade (we keep him at his home school instead of sending him to the center.) You get diagnoses for things like ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, ASD, CP, anxiety, OCD..... If a person is also intellectually gifted, they frequently are referred to as 2E (which doesn’t really work for many people as they have more than one challenge).Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I have a 4th grader in AAP (since last year) who was diagnosed as 2E with ADHD (combined type, but it's mainly inattentive and fidgeting) - and thus far the child has not been medicated.
The child already has a tutor once a week for a writing but continues to have writing issues (and it's ONLY writing issues - the child is above grade level in both math and reading, and no behavior issues). The writing issues are both form (hard to read) and content (totally disorganized).
I am just really struggling on whether I should medicate for only these writing issues, and wondered if anyone else had experience. I don't know that there is anything else short of medicated that we can do - I feel we've reached the end of other options.
This sounds like my kid too. How did you get the 2e diagnosis? Recommendations are welcome and will be appreciated.
Do you have a 504/IEP?
I’m new to this. My kids AAP teacher seems is telling me about organization, time management, and attention issues. But I’m not getting any information about evaluations for LD’s. They get evasive and an administration always becomes involved when I bring it up or when I ask too many questions.
My kid also has trouble writing too. But I want to do something, it’s to the point where my kid wants out of AAP. But I know his issues won’t go away.

I'm one of the posters above. Honestly, I would start with thank you notes. It's like telling a very short story that follows a formula - thank you for the xxx, I can't wait to do yyy, so glad I got to see you and do zzzz together, etc.
In fifth grade we are heavy on typing and getting that up to speed. Nowadays, you can get away in many office setting with only typing.

Anonymous wrote:Gosh -- NP here, but I'm also struggling with newly diagnosed 3rd grader in AAP -- and specifically the WRITING!!! The last post was very helpful to me... and I'm generally concerned that 1) he's not doing enough writing with enough guidance at school to make much meaningful progress in this area; 2) what strategies should we use to help him outside of class; and 3) how do we get those strategies to translate into school work?
If anyone has any additional thoughts about the challenges of teaching writing to young-ish ADHD kids -- I'd love to hear them. We're already investing in a tutor (once a week). We may need more, but I HATE the notion of having him do an extra hour of "school" each day -- 7 hours is enough! Are there any fun computer programs that anyone has found? He needs help with writing "organization" (among other things).
