Ask for the fork. Chinese born here and sometime s will forget to use Chopsticks at Chinese restaurant

DH, my sister and I (all Asian) plus my Jewish BIL had dinner at a Chinese restaurant. 3/4 of us ask for forks. Life long experience has taught us that eating with a fork is easier.

Take some plastic forks--just in case, but most restaurants in Asia will give you a fork if you ask--and, probably, if you don't ask. FWIW, I lived in Japan many, many years ago and forks were readily available in restaurants, even then. I did learn to use chopsticks, but there were some dishes that were tough to manage, even with practice.

Bring a fork. Most people who didn't grow up using chopsticks don't even use them correctly, anyways.

You will be given a fork in all developed Asian countries, OP. Sometime they will hand you one automatically (which always made my European mother feel quite awkward, but my Japanese father and I would get a good laugh out of that, er, "bias").

You can also bring your own fork, no harm in that either.

OP, I have terrible fine motor skills (it's a learning disability) and what I did was to buy "training chopsticks" for children off Amazon.

They come with loops so you know where to put your fingers and I just ate every single dinner for like two weeks using them. It helped me a LOT.

Another Asian

I watched a few YouTube videos and always get chopsticks from fast food sushi and take out places, so I always have done at home to practice. It’s not easy still, but I manage well enough. It seems that my Asian American friends are okay giving me advice if it comes to that when we’re out eating too. I think it means a lot to try, but if you can’t do it (or if you’re not willing to put on the effort) that should be fine too.
