Can you provide specific details about how Garrison is doing well, other than their finally modernized building? How has that changed since 2012, when the Shaw community rallied to save Garrison? I joined the campaign to save Garrison way back when. But I don't see a school that has changed all that much (in terms of number of students or student achievement) in the intervening 6 years, and part of me wonders if consolidating Garrison and Seaton back then would have been better. Last year, Garrison had <35 kids in each grade, K-5.

The boundary review process in 2014 included the following recommendation:

"Capacity for Middle Grades Recommendation 16: DCPS shall open a stand-alone middle school at the original Shaw Middle School site to replace the middle grades program at Cardozo High School, in order to:
• Improve middle grade academics and programming for families in Wards 1 and 2;
• Increase capacity of Cardozo HS for 9th -12th grade programming; and
• Build a strong middle grades cohort to feed into Cardozo HS from the elementary feeders."

Why won’t you send your kids to Cardozo?

BC it's too far, BC it's not a stand-alone school, BC it doesn't have enough differentiation for advanced kids, BC Ross and Thomson kids don't also go there. A stand-alone middle school within walking distance of our house with kids from Ross, Thomson, Seaton, Cleveland and Garrison is appealing to me. The current option is not.

We're in the same boat, PP, and send our kids to one of the original feeder schools. We'll be at the meeting on Saturday and hope to see other families and community members there.

That's great to hear. Our school has also started reaching out to the SBOE and trying for other contacts within DCPS.

Shaw is one of those areas that has gotten expensive but not nice.

Except there was a Shaw Middle School, for decades. That's why that site is called the "Shaw Middle School "site. I know people who graduated from there. They only closed it 10 years ago.
