NP: Tisch is for the performing and media arts. URM or not, if they want you for your talents, they want you.
NYU is looking for full-students. If you are a full pay, they want you.
Oberlin is for artistic/musical students who are also academically talented. They want you for your talent. Oberlin is more willing to invest in their students.
PP last year Oberlin could not fill its class. Many full pay DC kids were shocked to get rejected by NYU. Its fine to say all this based in 5 year old information but make sure that your kid does not end up in the shocked and disappointed by relying on dated information. This area has a ton of full pay kids with A averages from public and private who apply. Its not so easy to be in the 19%.
Oberlin class of 2022 is over filled by at least 100 students so this is dated information.

NYU is notoriously terrible with financial aid. It typically only meets 71% of a student’s financial aid need, and that 71% includes loans. For a wealthy school, that sort of aid package is truly dreadful. It’s no surprise that students graduating from NYU leave with average college debt far higher than the national average.
Yeah - I'm the PP and yes we learned that the hard way but my DS was our first so we didn't know what we didn't know.

NYU had 75,000 applicants for the class of 2018 and a 19% acceptance rate. The median SAT was 1440 and the typical student had an A/A- average. Some posters have dated information. Getting into NYU has gotten significantly harder over the last 5 years.
The 1440 sat average is described as their "global" average, I assume this includes their international campuses.
According to their 17-18 cds, the NYC campus received 64000 actionable applications, 18000 admits so 28% acceptance rate. SAT percentile ranges were 1290-1490, act was 29-33 for enrolled first time freshmen.

Those scores are on the lower side so I’m not sure either is likely. Is he at a private or public school? Solid B at a public would be a hard no, but coming from top private and being male both help. Make sure he has some real targets though. What draws him to these two schools? Use that info to find choices that are more likely. My daughter is at Oberlin and liked Denison and Dickinson as targets.
