As an adult, I have known several people who attended Tulane. To grossly generalize, I would say that they are all smart people who are not particularly driven to succeed.

I think the first question to ask is how resourceful your kid could be in a hurricane evacuation. If your kid wouldn't be good and aggressive about getting transportation out, nothing else anyone here could say about Tulane or the University of Miami matters.

Katrina nearly destroyed the Tulane campus in 2005.

New Orleans is a great city, and Tulane sounds like a great school, but kids who go there need to be able to handle an evacuation. If they're really anxious, shy, rebellious or disorganized, they'd be better off in places that don't get evacuated every few years.

I know that any place can have a disaster, but the odds that Tulane will be evacuated in a given year are comparable to the odds that a good student will get into Harvard.

I don’t get the first sentence. Partying and drinking is an inherent part of the Tulane culture, and you need to know that going it. That’s just the way it is. That doesn’t mean it’s not a great school, or every last person goes out four nights a week...but I would not recommend it for students who can’t deal with distractions well or who doesn’t like to go out period.
