On what grounds? CPS wouldn't care. 16 year olds are allowed to be left alone; they are even allowed to be the responsible person watching younger kids. And as for the cops, violating hotel rules isn't criminal offense and this is hardly kidnapping.

Unfortunately a parent who would leave their own 16 year old alone in a hotel room several hours away is possibly also the type who would invite friends along and then not make it clear to the other parents that the kids would be alone, unsupervised in a hotel room. In fact, the parent may not even talk to the other parents at all but issue the invitation directly from their kid to the other kids.

At that age, you really need to be able to trust what your own kid is telling you. You can't assume that other parents are going to see the need to provide the same level of supervision that you would.

I give my 16 year old a ton of freedom and I would not allow this.

I did allow her to go to NY for the day with another friend and take the train back home that evening- they wanted to stay overnight and we said no.

You could try this or have them go to somewhere they have a friend to stay over. If they insist on one location, then it's to do something in particular and I would definitely say no.

FYI - if a hotel suspects that an adult has left kids in a room unsupervised, they can deactivate the room key and if the kids left the room they would have to go to the front desk to get their key reactivated. The hotel might expect a responsible adult to be with them to get it reactivated.
