I'm turning 40 next month and TTC naturally (starting month 3 but also breastfeeding my first.) My first was an IVF baby with PGS (genetic) testing conceived at 38/born just after I turned 39. I know some folks have fertility reversals after successful IVF pregnancy so we're trying naturally before I wean my first and do a second transfer (thankfully, we have one frozen embryo but doctor wants my 1st fully weaned before we attempt and I'm not about to rush that.)

There are soooo many factors but I feel more hopeful because there are several women who conceived around/after 40 in my family. Genetics definitely play a role, as do epigenetics and your/your partner's overall health. I truly believe after all my treatments (unexplained infertility; slight male sperm issues) that so much more rests on your physical age rather than numerical. Do everything you can to be as healthy as possible and reduce stress. I would also encourage you to take the supplements I was encouraged to take at my fertility clinic, for 3 months PRIOR to TTC, as these will help with final egg development: DHEA (if not breastfeeding), CoQ10, 3mg melatonin, and of course-- a prenatal (last 3 compatible with breastfeeding.) Your partner should also supplement with CoQ10, male multi that has zinc and all the other goodies for healthy sperm. We also take additional Vitamins C and drink tons of water. People are so judgmental so I would encourage you to only share that you are trying with people you know will be 100% supportive. I didn't plan to start my family in my late 30's but you don't always get what you want, do you? Best of luck to everyone!

It's possible, OP. For us, it took several rounds of medicated IUIs. Pregnant at 40, delivered at 41. Good luck!

It's just that you're now being forced into a reality check. It was easy to daydream for the last two years, but now that it's real, you can't help but think of the downsides. I am going through a milder version: I am sure I want my kid to have a sibling, but I am not in denial that this will change our family dynamic and be physically harder than having one. That said, our son is 3.5 and has become quite easy, plus, now I am under no illusion I can handle this without help, so I feel better prepared all around

I would recommend listing the various fears you have and then thinking about ways to solve potential problems (e.g. "I'm afraid I won't be able to physically handle another baby." Solution: more childcare and rest, and reducing work stress). Congrats and good luck!

I’m 41. I really wanted to have a second baby for last 2 years. Last 2 months I started feeling, that maybe it’s not what I want. I won’t be able to manage it. We have a good life. Today I found out I’m pregnant and I feel like I destroyed my family. Is it hormones? I want to happy, but I feel like we are doomed. What’s wrong with me????

Congratulations! It’s great you are expecting at the age of 31...

I started late, as did she. School and our careers got in the way. I'll be an old dad when my youngest turn 20. Oh well. I'm stoked.
