Seriously? Where did you graduate? I graduated from an FCPS HS in 1984 and no one did this.
Midwest, medium sized city.
My sister graduated in 1986, and she did not have that done. She (and her friends) did the formal yearbook picture then went to Sears and had pictures taken in a different top.

Chiming in with others to say that this was a thing when I graduated (HS 95). Surburban HS in mid-sized city. Everyone else got their yearbook pictures taken at school on picture day, but seniors got some sort of notice to make an appt at the pro photographer chosen by the school. Yearbook photos were done with tuxes for boys, and black velvet top for girls (supplied by the studio) and you could also have others taken in other clothes at the studio, though I think going outside was not an option at this place.
I really liked my photos and still have them.

+1. Graduated '87 from a large Midwestern town and there were no senior photos through school. Everyone paid for the professional and then gave one photo to the school for the yearbook. Nobody dressed the same though. They were expensive and I'm hoping my DS will forgo this senior year (except for the school one).

I graduated in 1993 as well and we had this in LA. I remember when I got to college lots of kids brought their senior yearbook and we all laughed about the fact that everyone had the same black drape top. These were kids that grew up all over the country. Now I will admit that the majority had gone to a Catholic High School so maybe in some areas they did not do this at the public high schools.

I'm 55 and it was a 'thing' when I was in high school in the midwest. It is not a new thing.

Subject: Are senior pictures a thing?
At my kids' MCPS high school, the senior portraits are taken at the school during the summer, by appointment. Kids get the formal tux/gown photo but they also get to bring a couple of wardrobe changes and probably have 20 or so different shots taken. They have turned out really well. I can't see why anyone would have anything else done. These are not the 30 second photo shoots that I remember from my high school yearbook days.

Ours does the Senior pictures during the summer, maybe a week or 2 before school starts. They are allowed one gown/tux photo plus 2 "personal" photos that can be them in their sports uniform/band uniform or just two different outfits.
A lot of people around here skip the "personal" photos that the school package provides because they are limited (only a few cheesy backdrops and only one pose each) and instead opt for them done by a private photographer.
I know my kid's school won't allow you to use a private photographer for the gown/tux photos because they want them to match.

You can make your own graduation photo cards using your own photos. You don't have to use professional portraits. That's what we did and they turned out perfectly.
I do understand why parents and their seniors enjoy getting the professional photo shoots done, though. It is nice to have those pictures of them at such a milestone in their lives.

I graduated from a small town in PA in 1990 and no one did fancy senior pics. I do have cousins who still live in the area and they send out graduation announcements with a collage of several different posed photos, so I guess it's currently a thing there. But they are also still doing perms and vertical bangs.
My kid would be horrified to do a "photo shoot" and most if not all of his friends (FCPS) just get the photos done at school. All I really want is one 8 x 10, 2 5 x7s for grandparents and maybe 8 wallets - I don't need to wallpaper my house in senior portraits!

For the yearbook at the school where I graduated, girls had to have the same top but then we all got extra pix in tops that took ages of time to find so that you had just the right look. And don't get me started on the hair or make-up. Even the guys got senior pictures.
I have to say that I still really like mine even though it is 30-35 years later! All that time and effort really paid off. I looked GOOD!!!
All 4 of our seniors got their senior pictures. In addition to it being a great thing to send to grandparents, it is the picture they each used for a while on resumes and college apps.
FYI, that's a great way to get a resume dumped.
Maybe they are theater kids.
