Mine just called me because he didn’t feel like answering my text. So I’m...flattered?

I try to keep the lines open by letting him get away with an extremely brief checkin, so naturally I only get to ask one of my 300 questions. Guess I won’t know if they are still serving those fantastic mint chocolate chips cookies in the d-hall, what his work-study job is like, does his roommate snore...

I'm a female and I was terrible about calling my parents when I was in college. I had places to go, people to see and I hated being obligated into having a weekly telephone call. That meant having to be in my dorm room at 5:00 every Sunday (or whatever) which was a pain.

Texting and cellphones have made communicating with our kids so much easier.

This was true of me as well. I still feel like, for the most part, girls are way better at communicating. I have two boys myself, but I'm basing this off what my friends with daughters tell me and compared to my own.

As brand new freshman few calls and often no replies to texts. I think this is normal breaking away, growing up thing. He is calling a lot now in his sophomore year.

I had a quick text conversation (she started the discussion) the night we dropped her off and a phone call (she called me) on day 2. While this is likely to slow down, it has made the transition a little easier knowing she misses her dad.

Mainly texts that come daily.

I still text her good morning just as I did every M-F when she was in HS (because I left before she was awake back then) and she texts back a gif of how she thinks the day will go. So far all have been happy/positive gifs, so that’s good!

Other texts were to let me know she’d ordered X from Amazon. Or asking about the dog, lol.

We’ve only chatted on the phone once but that’s fine because neither of us are big phone people. We are planning on doing either Skype or FaceTime every Sunday to catch-up and her request is that I’m at home when it happens so she can say hello to the dog.

This is my sons 3rd week away and 2nd week of classes. He's called me 3 times. He is not a big texter (well he is, but not with his parents), I think he has initiated 3 texts and will respond to texts about 60% of the time, which is a lot higher than his average before he left. We don't Skype so far but I may try to set that up with him from time to time.

First couple of weeks, we were told by son that he was fine, and to stop texting and he will text if something came up! Then we had regular weekend Skype sessions. Usually 5-10 minutes.

Dropped DS off last Wed. We haven't spoken by phone but there have been a handful of texts. Very short. Classes started yesterday, which was also his birthday. We tried to call to wish him a happy birthday and see how his day went, but left a message.

Omg. My future just flashed before my eyes!!

My child had an initial rough adjustment period and therefore there was a lot of communication - text/Facetime/etc. Doing better now, but still get approximately a billion texts a day - but that's typical for us, regardless of location. I'm sure it will lessen as independence sets in.

Sunday phone calls and that's it. She hates texting.

Not sure the cat thing is "sweet"--but in advance, my kid was also only concerned about missing her cat. I think it is sort of funny.

Luckily, she is texting me often now that she is on campus, and we do have a weekly phone plan. I second the advice to set that up.
