Trump aside, the biggest problem in the last 30 years has been CONGRESS. They can't work together. Democrats do better than Republicans for sure, and honestly I think if Democrats had a better foil they would be more than they are today. But I am not a fan of all the virtue signaling and moral superiority that we have embraced, it is what alienated half the country. There are a LOT of poor white people in middle America who were ignored. Republican policies did this to them but Republicans are the only ones who kept talking to them. That was a failure to lead, a failure to be present.

The country has structural issues in the foundation. Now many of these structural issues can only be overcome by constitutional amendment. There should be a bipartisan election commission that should conduct elections, decide election policies in every state and declare results. The elections should not be elft to the party in power in the states which leads to Undemocratic and arbitrary electoral practices.

1) Electoral College: This slavery era vestige is making the country unrepresentative to its people. The GOP has won the popular vote JUST ONCE(by one state in 20014) since 1988 but they get to decide policy for the entire country despite not having the mandate. This is patently undemocratic and is a top reason for the seeds of mutiny.

2) Senate representation: The senate is an undemocratic institution that is skewed towards states like WY and MT with population of a small town in CA. This makes the country pander to the needs of the rural people rather than ALL CITIZENS equally. Why should one set of citizens be treated superior to another set?

3) Gerrymandering of house districts - No party should be able to gerrymander the districts however they want in the states they control. This must be decided by bipartisan committee that is fair and balanced.

4) The fixed structure of a biparty system: Unless the rules are changed a viable third party can't emerge. There is no option to have multi-party coalitions representing various interests of the citizens in our presidential system. This is a big factor in low voter participation.

5) Automatic registration and election day holiday: This is a no brainer. We shouldn't make it harder to participate in democratic voting.

6) Undemocratic closure of voting precincts, curtailing of voting hours or early voting: Even more undemocratic practices to stop certain minorities from voting. How is this allowed in a SO CALLED democratic country?

Obama could have prosecuted fin execs for the crisis. NOTHING WAS DONE! I'm from the small white world and the fact that many involved in the crisis are BFF with senior Dems is massively cringe-worthy, much worse than anything DJT has done so far.

Obama could have pushed harder against the GWOT, but again, there's $$$ in going with the flow.

The Dems could have framed so many other issues differently. The identity politics schtick has both failed to realize much progress for women and minorities and has alienated many voters. FAIL.

The simple truth is that if the GOP is bad, and I think it is, one has to get very serious about beating them. This means questioning your existing assumptions, including this incredibly bizarre one that the Democrats are always and everywhere doing EVERYTHING they can, as that's prima facie garage!

Unfortunately, when money is involved as you explained things are not solved in the manner they should be. GOP and Democratic parties are both in shambles in my humble opinion. But we as people, fall for their agenda no matter how you slice it. We start becoming like them, pointing fingers at each other rather than working on a resolution. At some point, a great leader will be needed that can really bring people together who will do the right thing. I don't care if it is a 3rd party. But we as Americans are afraid to vote for something unknown.

I think the crisis in the political system is the symptom of a larger disease, which is a lack of social cohesion on the whole. A lot of it is the product of racism. American life is lonely and people do not feel like they owe “the other” much of anything. Everyone is stressed, struggling to give themselves the standard of living they think they need, struggling to pay bills, struggling to raise their kids, working all the time and not taking vacations. All of this contributes to a lonely and isolating outlook, and we are beginning to reap the consequences. I would not even have noticed this were it not for the fact that my parents are from a different culture and I have found the differences remarkable.

No but we have participated in the race to the bottom in decorum and we ignored the demise of middle America until they came back to bite us in the butt.

Middle America was not ignored by the democrats. It was the GOP starting with reagan that has just one policy of tax cuts for the wealthy that is the root cause. Now wealth doesn't get shared with the employees anymore than needed. So the country has become the republic of the wealthy for the wealthy by the wealthy. That is THE PROBLEM. So the GOP gives tax cuts to the wealthy and then incites the white eneducated blue color mass by playing white identity politics. This division is gonna doom the country.

the solution is easy, tax the wealthy upto 50% and then provide universal healthcare to everyone along with good education.

Methinks you need to look at the withering apparatus the Democrats presided over in many areas. And like it or not, the Clinton-era NAFTA and fin deregulation presage by all of 2-4 years a sharp fall off in turn out for Dems in many areas. If you're scared of the Republicans, giving the current crop of Dem leaders a pass strikes me as suicidal.

Agree with this, although I think we are generally held to a hugher standard, and it is difficult to know how to respond when the other side uses dirty tactics then stands aghast if you respond in kind, or takes it even further if you don't.

The problem with Dems is that we're always playing defense against whatever current republican nonsense is going down. They make a mess, we clean it up but the clean up hurts a little. They blame us for the hurt and take credit for the results of the cleanup. Then they get power again, only to make a new mess and start the cycle anew.
