Many schools (middle/high I presume) require it to swipe into the building, take attendance. In light of the added focus on that, your kid better have it handy. As others mentioned, it's also the goto ID for many other city services including DPL and DPR. Also, absent another form of ID, it's your child's best way have a picture ID handy.

Oddly ours has never worked for checking out library books and always worked just fine for WMATA. Our library just gets the kids names off the cards and checks them out manually so we just got them library cards so they can access the on-line services DCPL offers and I printed their numbers with a label printer and added to their DC One Cards.
I was at the Tenleytown Metro this morning and as usual all the Wilson students were basically turnstile jumping while WMATA staff and police looked the other way - no idea why it is so hard for this city to properly do things.
So annoying. Supposedly (and I don't believe it) enforcement begins Oct 1 after everyone has had ample opportunity to get new cards.
I've heard some kids discuss that they don't want to swipe them because then their movements can be tracked for truancy or other purposes.
