OP here. The guy said the same applies to apologies among couples or friends. He expects both sides to apologize.

For some reason this whole discussion/dispute makes me not want to see him anymore even as friends. He seems really insecure.

I used to say it, and mean it, quite often to women. Then I found out saying it made me a "beta" so now I say it perhaps once a year.
