I see. So the Democrats on the School Board are too liberal, except when they aren't liberal enough.

The last Republican who ran (and lost) for our School Board seat ran on a platform of spending less money on lower-income schools and redistributing resources to wealthy schools. The incumbent Democrat, while she hasn't done anything to balance the demographics at county schools for a decade, at least supports spending more money on the students who need it most.

So, the Democratic way is separate, but equal (or maybe give them a bit more as long as they are not in school with our kids)?

They have moved wealthy kids out of Lee to West Springfield, wealthy kids out of Annandale to Lake Braddock, they won't move any kids from West Potomac (overcrowded) to Mt. Vernon (available space), and they won't build the western high school because too many folks are afraid of the boundary changes involved - which would include moving kids from Langley to Herndon. They have been spending our tax dollars to expand schools because they are so afraid to touch the boundaries.

Many on the School Board need to go. Some have been on it way too long (I'm looking at you Moon and Strauss) and some are way too political (McAlveen, Schultz, Hynes, Evans). They are all afraid of the cascading boundary changes that would be brought on by a new western high school.

They do when they adopt their annual budget. It’s just that the conservatives blow certain social issues out of proportion because they think they are potential wedge issues.

That strategy usually blows up in their face. Hopefully Schultz will be defeated next year and replaced by someone who is less of a Tea Party shill.

It's actually the right-wing Republicans who are obsessed with the issue. The local Republicans are also quite racist, as evidenced by the continued need to bash Obama even though we now have far and away the worst president in American history, Trump.

Truth be told, Fairfax County is overwhelmingly Democratic now, but it's a moderate strain - more Clinton than Sanders.

The School Board has one over-the-top liberal Democrat (Pay Hynes) and two over-the-top conservative Republicans (Elizabeth Schultz and Tom Wilson). The other nine members are garden-variety local politicians. They'd actually be more progressive when it comes to school policy if they were appointed, like the old School Board, not up for election every four years.

Um...ehem...Ryan McElven...cough cough.

He make Hynes look like a tea party conservative.

He has degrees from UVA and Columbia, speaks multiple languages, and has worked for Brookings. His dad teaches or taught social studies for decades at Kilmer MS. People give him crap because he was young when he was elected, and doesn't have any hair, but his politics are mainstream liberal. Someone jumped on him for taking on the dress code policy, but it was common sense to speak up upon learning that the rules were more restrictive for girls than for boys, and that girls were getting called out for violations more often. Because maybe dress codes for girls that are based on boys not be able to control themselves are antiquated.

He also went on prom dates w high schoolers and focuses a lot of energy on being cool on social media.

because to get and remain elected you have to go through the democratic party machine. The Fairfax Democratic Committee chooses who gets their endorsement = getting elected

Shultz keeps them balanced and the spotlight on while many of the others try to do us wrong under the cover of late night or behind closed doors. She has the best interest of the students and families at heart.

Referring to changing an overtly racist school name as a "stupid liberal cause" shows pretty clearly where the R minority stands. If you wanted more money for schools, you should have voted for the restaurant tax.

And, this is the problem. The SB has become a partisan playground. Pat Hynes, earlier PP said is way, way left--just look at her tweets. McElveen and Evans are also pretty far left and concerned only with social justice and not education. Strauss is another--ironic that she is super concerned about the poor children--and, yet, protects her affluent schools at all costs. She is only concerned about the poor kids who are not in her district. Schultz is right wing--but, also has some common sense when it comes to budget issues. Some of the others also show some concern for the budget and commons sense--but, from the meetings I've watched, Schultz has the best understanding. Wilson tries to mediate and propose compromises, but the leftists on the Board shut him down almost every time.

The naming of Justice High is an example. (My personal belief is that dropping the JEB would be the best solution -and the cheapest. That it could have been done over time.) It was clear, though, that some were determined for it to be named after Justice Marshall. (The lack of common sense is rampant, when the proposers seemed to have forgotten that we already have a Marshall High.) Some other names were proposed and there was a great one of a man with Hispanic/Native American background. His kids had attended Stuart and he was not only a war hero, but an educator who had worked on Reading. This was not good enough for our leftists. They were determined that it include Justice Marshall--therefore the name "Justice High." They claimed it was named after the three names proposed. That was b.s.

Another issue is the transgender one. They brought it up before it was even a very big issue. No consideration at all for people who saw it differently. Unisex bathrooms were not an option for them.

And,McElveen's latest was the dress code. He thought there should be no difference between dress for boys and girls........
It turns out to be okay--but taking time on this was just silly.

The SB is filled with Democratic party players. That is a fact and to pretend otherwise is simply a lie. They all participate in local politics even when the SB is supposed to be nonpartisan. McElveen worked for Obama. He is the source from which all this liberal crap foisted on our kids - at great expense mind you - has come from. And then Sandy Evans with her re-naming purge at Jeb Stuart HS... all money FCPS should have put towards teacher pay. But who cares about teachers when stupid liberal causes must be pushed on our kids?!!

Lots of BS there. The Republicans invariably oppose taxes and increases in school funding. Just read the crap that Pat Herrity has spewed over the years. The Republicans are the ones who force teachers to work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

But when the School Board actually wakes up and decides to rid a school of its albatross of a Confederate general name, they fall all over themselves pretending that the cost is somehow taking money directly out of the teachers' pockets. Such hypocrites.

Wrong Again. This county is overwhelming Democrat. The meals tax FAILED miserably a couple of years ago. It is Democrats in this county who voted it down - in a huge manner. That would have been money for our schools. Pat Herrity has been pushing for a full and real audit of our schools - the same type of audit that the county goes through. That is not cutting money to the schools. And BTW - the county has agreed to greater and greater transfers of money to our schools year after year. The FCPS school budget is now greater that then entire budget of 8 states! Don't tell me they are short on money to pay teachers. They are short on brains and would rather push liberal social crap that doesn't benefit kids. THAT has been their priority.
