Toasted but you toast the two pieces sandwiched together in one slot so the outside is toasty but the inside stays soft, which holds the mayonnaise better and doesn't cut your mouth when you bite.

I lightly toast the bread, and I smear it with a little butter on one half and a little mayo on the other while the bread is still warm. But I'm like another poster and I like the bacon, lettuce and tomato to be cold and crisp so those are in the fridge until I am ready to assemble. And, yeah, I know, a lot of people go eew for cold bacon but I love it on a BLT. It works for me!
