Subject: What do you call these cakes and where are you from?
My dad is from Baltimore and calls yellow cake w/chocolate icing “chocolate cake”. It confused my mother (from MI) for months when they were dating. He told her his favorite dessert was chocolate cake. She baked a couple of cakes and he wasn’t really into them. Finally they went to a picnic and my dad referred to a yellow cake as “chocolate cake” (while enthusiastically eating it). Mystery solved!

I’m from Baltimore and I agree with this PP. If you told me you were serving chocolate cake and put yellow cake with chocolate frosting on my plate, I’d be thoroughly confused.

Also, fyi that Devil's food cake uses cocoa powder and usually extra baking soda (hence its similarity to angel food cake) while chocolate cake usually uses melted chocolate. You can see the difference because Devil's food cake is darker than chocolate cake.
