Subject: MIL and our sofa?
My mom hates our large sofa. Hates it. It’s squashy and Ari for my dad to get out of, which I understand. We also have a two seater reclining sofa that is rather new, which we happily have them sit on instead when they visit.
Yet, on every single visit my mother offers to buy us a new couch. She just hates our couch and can’t fathom how we don’t find it uncomfortable. I’m not personally attached to it, but it’s always been my husband’s couch, as it’s extra-long and he’s 6.5 feet tall. He can actually stretch out on it! So as long as he is happy with his couch, we’re keeping it, as it’s our house, and we are the ones that primahave to use the furniture on a daily basis.

I’d make up a little sign on an index card that says “We are not replacing the couch for several years: after the kids are much older.” Keep it in your back pocket, and then when she asks, just silently take out the sign and hold it up so she can read it.

No. This response gives tacit approval her being rude. By engaging, OP would be sending the message that the comment was appropriate in the first place and that she looks forward to her MIL opining about everything else.

My answer to this is "when DD2 is solidly potty trained and hasn't had an accident in 6 months".
But also - if she thinks you need a new couch, then she needs to buy it for you. My ILs had the MOST uncomfortable and teeny tiny guest bed ever, and we bought them a new (larger) frame and mattress because we hated it so much. We're the ones who use it, so it made sense.
