The Protestant Work Ethic doesn't extended to beauty and fashion.

Keeping leather purses and shoes polished, and wearing clothes that look tailored to fit your proportions, not wearing light-colored or ripped or torn jeans, keeping hair somewhat styled and off the face, wearing a bit of make up for the ladies, those are simple ways to look less frumpy.

Italians are better at every day fashion.

They wear black or natural leather purses and shoes. They wear dress pants or skirts. The men are in blazers or suit jackets and pants. The women wear simple styles. They don't wear tee shirts, hoodies, athletic wear and shoes or swimwear like flip flops as every day attire.

In Bermuda, the people dress more formal every day, even though they are on the beach. They wear jackets, ties, shoes and sock, and Bermuda shorts instead of pants. The beach wear is conservative. It's not acceptable for women to walk around with a lot of skin showing, even with their beach attire.

Some countries are more conservative in their clothing and that usually looks dressier and less sporty and athletic by American standards.

I can be just as a comfortable in a white blouse and chino pants and leather shoes and purse, and a I can in yoga attire, really.

Maybe in NYC, LA, DC and Chicago Gold Coast they are fit and athletic. Have you recently been in a mall or a chain restaurant in some midwestern town or Texas? Or at an airport? I’ve lived in London for the last ten years and I honestly experience a shock every time I go back to the US.

Also, American women wear better shoes. You'll never convince me otherwise. We don't care how impractical the shoe or how much our feet hurt if they complete our outfit, we wear them. The Europeans are much bigger on the comfy footwear. My new nanny who is Central American shared with me that for them, dressing up is a sign of status. She loves it here because your appearance doesn't define your social status. She said a woman is criticized/scrutinized if she's not dressed up in public. So sad! I love the freedom to look like a bum or be on permanent workout gear here if that's my choice. I mean there are ppl like OP but luckily they stay in anonymity.

Because I work from home. If you see me outside of my house M-F before 7 pm or so, I'll be wearing workout clothes. They are comfortable. I'm not changing to run to the grocery store or Target, and I am not going to sit in my home dressed in slacks and dress shirts. Bite me.

I love European comfortable shoes, to actually walk places. I've added them to my frumpy wardrobe, just to piss OP off. (Actually I have knee pain and it's better for me to be functional and have a good life, rather than to be decorative, but don't tell OP that.)

Yep. I've also stopped shaving everything in addition to the frumpy clothes, flip flops, and lack of makeup. Soon I'll be able to start braiding my armpit hair and adding decorative beads.
