Yes, the only nonstops to Asheville are on Allegiant (ugh), Fridays and Mondays only, 1 flight per day each way. If that doesn't work, the next best flight option is to fly to Charlotte- it's just under a 2 hour drive to Asheville. But like others said, probably easier to just drive the whole way and skip flying.

Greenville, SC is actually closer than Charlotte. Direct flights out of DCA on American.

And Southwest out of BWI.

We drove and stopped in Blacksburg one way and Lexington the other way. It was not a bad drive when broken up. Like another PP, we were impressed with Greensville too.

My son goes to camp south of Asheville but my friend and I always go to the beach afterwards. One person driving there is a killer.

We've had kids at camps in the Brevard area. I've driven the route by myself and with someone else. I prefer when I go with someone else. Also, I try to avoid the 81 route because it seems like it is chock-a-block 18-wheelers riding very close together like one huge convoy in Virginia. Once you get to Tennessee and then North Carolina the trucks seem to disappear. The mountains are gorgeous on that route, though!

Occasionally one of the children has flown. It has always worked out except one time when one of the kids had some big bottles of shampoo and stuff in a carry-on. The stuff was discarded for obvious reasons by TSA. But the kid had to unpack the carry-on and then had a tough time getting it all back together and was still flustered about the experience when arriving back in DC. We presumed that stuff was going in the trunk. Live and learn for all of us.
