OP here. We ended up driving from QC to Baie-Saint-Catherine for whale watching cruise (Croiseres AML).

The whale watching cruise (3 hours) was really nice and the drive itself was very good. We stopped in La Malbaie for lunch and out of the blue unplanned stop in a small village called Port-au-persil. Port-au-persil had beautiful views of the river and the locals were taking a dip in a small waterfall with a natural rock slide. We couldn't stop ourselves jumping into it.

We stayed here in QC. Stylish, lots of space and you can walk to shopping, restaurants. There's also a nice rooftop. We would take the kids up there at night to play games

I also think it's a long drive. It's 9.5 hours driving-not including any stops and you have to stop at the border. How long that takes depends on what time you get there and how long the line is. We flew Southwest to Portland ME and drove to QC. Next time I will think about flying to Manchester, NH and driving to Montreal. I think 3 days Montreal and 3 days QC is okay. It's beautiful, we loved our trip there.
