Take the 295 parallel diversion right after crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge (you can hook up again with the NJ Turnpike using 195 later - saves tolls and is usually less crowded). Immediately after you hook left onto 295, there’s a rest stop on the right. It does not have staffed food, but it’s quiet, has a good picnic area and it’s great for running around.

I drive to the Jersey Shore every weekend this time of year. We always leave after 7:30 Friday night and it’s usually painless.

Otherwise, I agree with PPs, just drive as long as you can and stop at rest areas. There are places in northern Maryland, Delaware, and NJ.
+1 We've started doing this drive at 7 p.m., so the kids sleep through most of it...It's hard on us as parents, but it's easier than the traffic and the constant stopping.

If they're already stopping at Havre de Grace, barely 1/2 south of Baltimore, it's gonna be a long trip.
