Ridiculous. My ring was 2k and we picked it out together with an eye to both style and price. And we were both making about 180k at the time.

Thank god my grandmother wanted DH to have the diamond from her ring to give me and he accepted. We make about $350K combined and I can’t imagine spending that sort of money on a ring. We probably run in circles where people do (most of our friends have more money than us); thankfully, we don’t run in circles where people talk about/comment on their ring or others.

I designed my ring, and we discussed whether DH was OK with it. I would never have gone with something that he wasn't comfortable with.

My ring was 5k. I was shocked. I would have been happy with a gemstone for all I care.

I hope she puts that much thought and desire into your relationship and future marriage. Rings and jewelry is kind of meaningless if you don’t have a solid foundation.

My ring was $6,000. Our HHI is 160k - is that poor to you, PP?

Two months salary is standard. Unless you think she is clueless as to how much it costs and would rather you spend less, it's not unreasonable for you to spend 30k. Sorry.

What you mean is, asschers are cut deeper (otherwise they would be see-through in parts) so they face up smaller.

Get on James Allen and get a great round with GIA papers that faces up nicely.

This. Most women don't want to wear a ring everyday that is valued over 15k. The rings also resell for a fraction of their purchase cost.

If she insists on a 30-40k ring, think about pawn shops and jewelry resellers. Also, you may want to rethink some things if she insists on such an expensive ring.


The issue of depreciation from retail price is easily solved by buying on the secondary market.

OP here. We run is a circle where majority of our friends all have rings between 1.5-3 carat. I don’t want to get her something very small.
