I completely agree. I've had a number of conversations like OP and I've seen friends/acquaintances/colleagues having lenghthy conversations with non-spouses in a non-work environment plenty of times. Unless they snuggling up and smooching, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

What I want to know is why didn't the 'friend' of OP's wife say hello to OP when she saw him?

Should also add, if you’re tired enough to leave work early, you’re tired enough to skip the long conversations over coffee.

Regardless, lose some weight and take care of yourself. There is no reason your plumbing shouldn’t work at 55.

Give the guy a break! He saw someone in the same field, started chatting, sat down and had a nice conversation. The alternative was to go home and deal with a wife with whom he has a pretty lousy relationship. So what if he was tired.

This happened to me a few years ago. I was in the city in a Starbucks and was spotted by a friend of my wife who I didn't know having coffee and chatting with an attractive young woman about half my age. So this friend called my wife and planted all the same kind of BS about how I was behaving - smiling, flirting. My wife didn't know I was going to be in the city so by the time I got home she was pretty riled up. "You didn't tell me you were going into the city, why were you with a young woman yada yada yada." I pushed back and said I was in the city on business and I can talk to anyone I want. She then went on about "being with someone half your age, what will people think" and I said I didn't give a damn it was just a pleasant conversation. After a couple more minutes I ended the discussion by saying "Oh, by the way (our daughter) said to say hello". Then it was "why didn't you tell me that in the first place" and I said you didn't ask me who I was with, you just assumed I was hitting on someone because your idiot friend said so." She apologized profusely!
