Getting a house for 6 people with $5000 will be hard? If they go mid to late august it shouldn't be an issue. They can probably do it for even less.We had a house for 6 that was just across from the beach, in the heard of Duck, last summer and it was only $1500 for the week. No pool or hot tub but it was a nice house.

Montreal! Drive to upstate ny spend night at air bob and do same on way back. Stay in the city of Montreal, choose an affordable spot near a metro station. Tons of festivals with many free events. They do a fantastic summer. Check the exchange rate. Flying is prohibitive unless you score cheap tickets to Burlington by and drive from there.

At this point very unlikely there will be houses available in the right price range.
We usually find a 3 bedroom for ~$1500 for the week but we book in January or February as there aren’t many “smaller” houses.

Make your trip a week long and road trip to Chicago. One long day drive there and one long day home- stay downtown and go to Second City Comedy, Wrigley Field for a game, rent bikes and bike miles along the lakefront stopping to visit Lincoln Park Zoo (free), eat Chicago style pizza, visit the Skydeck at Sears Tower...hit the beach, Millenium Park, rent kayaks and go in the Chicago River, lakefront cruise, el to Chinatown or Greektown. If you’ve got high schoolers do a college visit- U of Chicago, Nortwestern, or Loyola.

I just planned a trip for a family of 4 to San Diego. I think you could do 6 for $5k although it might be tight. Flights were only $400 each, and a car is about $400 for a week.
But the beach there is free and if you ate your meals at home in an AirBnb (and didn't count those toward your budget as you'd be eating at home anyways) you should be fine to go see some cool stuff.

I was going to recommend a variation of this as well - you can get a house boat and do the 1000 islands.

We have 6 ppl too and that is a tight budget. Bc of the two hotel room need. I suggest Hilton Head. My kids love it.
Disney is our go to but we fly so it comes in around $6k
Overseas is usually more
It might be possible to do Mexico like Cancun
Potentially a cheap cruise but we don’t like cruises so never did it

I cannot imagine dropping $5k for a trip to Pittsburgh. We've been to Pittsburgh, Philly, NYC, etc. None of those cities can hold our attention for 5-7 nights. Those are long weekend trips at best, and they only cost $1k to $1,500 (when driving).
What about options in the $6k range?
For a family of six? I wasn’t trying to bust her budget.

Chicago? Flights are about $300/person, which would leave you with a good amount of money for lodging, food, and excursions - great architecture, go out on the lake, etc. Could be hot, but evenings are often pleasant.
