Now this is an amazing class! And also only $5 a class.

They have a beginner class and go over the moves. The teachers are authentic Latin dancers. It really bugs me when teachers water down the Latin flavor because they don't know or feel it.

I think Zumba is one of the most fun workouts. You just feel like you're dancing, but it counts as gym time! http://gymsfornormals.tumblr.com/post/11552882457/apology-accepted

I just took the class at blue heron last night with Shawna, after reading this thread last week, and it was awesome! Thanks to all of you who gave it such good reviews.

I tried it this week at DC Dance Collective in NW. The instructor was Elena and I thought she was fun. Definitely got a good cardio workout.

I live way up in Montgomery County and just started taking Zumba, and I love it! I can't dance, haven't been active in awhile, and was very nervous about starting class, but it is great! If you are nervous about the class, don't be! There were tons of steps I didn't know but I just laughed and went along with it!

Anonymous wrote:I've taken Zumba with Tanya and Coco in Arlington and they are both really good. Coco's is $15 per class at Kirkwood Sport & Health, and offers cooking classes as well. Tanya's is $10 per class and offers a beginner class at Perfect Pointe Studio. I took one in McLean also, but that one was a bit more aerobic style than dancing. I can't remember the name of that instructor, but I didn't have much fun at that class. I found them all on craigslist.

I also took a couple of classes with Coco and liked her and the class. Unfortunately the class got canceled due to lack of enrollment, but I would love to take another class that fits into my schedule. Zumbamama, if you are reading this, have you ever considered teaching a class in a school? I am a teacher at a high school in Fairfax County and am always looking for classes that meet around 4....something very hard to find at any gym. I always thought it would be great to have classes offered at our own school - I think they would be popular.

Any recommendations for instructors in NW DC who are good with people without rhythm?

I've been doing Zumba for a few years now at the WSC in Silver Spring. We originally had Tanya (highly lauded in recent posts) who had to leave us for bigger and better things, but one of our class-mates, Shawna Webster, got certified and has taken over with great success. Both have their own individual styles, but both are super-high-energy and the classes are really fun and very challenging (if you want them to be). Thankfully for us, Shawna learned from Tanya and so there's a lot of similarity there - but I'll agree with previous posts and say that Zumba varies from instructor to instructor. Some more hip-hop, some are more low impact, some face you and some face the mirror, some give a little bit of instruction and some don't. The key is to give it shot and figure out which style you like. You won't be disappointed! The weight loss (and better body image!!) speaks for itself.

I'm wondering this also. Should I even bother?

I'm in Montgomery County - any recommendations?

Shawna at Blue Heron Studio in Silver Spring. She breaks down the steps before she plays the music.
