Solution: have a single personal item small enough to fit under your seat. Check the rest. That's what I do. I just take a small backpack that holds my laptop and some papers and that's it.
Yes, there is a fee to check bags, but you can get around that many ways like if you book with an airline credit card that offers free bags; or if you fly a lot and have elite status; or have a credit card the reimburses those fees;...or just suck up the $25. Or fly Southwest (free checked bags for everyone)
