A new basic Toyota is one of the best car purchases that someone can make. Sell it after 2-3 years of use and someone will gladly pay an outrageous amount of money for it so that they can brag at the water cooler about being financially responsible.

+however many we are up to on never buying a VW. We had both a Passat wagon and a Golf, and the repairs (and defects) were crazy. I had the whole freaking ABS system FAIL on the Passat when the babysitter was driving my kids.

I will never buy a VW again. Plus with the whole emissions cheating scandal -- I don't trust them as far as I can throw them. Lying liars and cheats.

My family have all had volkswagens and they were great until transmission went out at 100k miles. Two jettas, a rabbit, and a bug.

You'll be able to find individual examples of just about any make and model that make it over 200K miles without major problems. Maybe this is a slight exaggeration, but not by much.

The difference is the probability that you bought the particular specimen that will reach that milestone.

If you buy a Toyota or Honda, the odds of being able to keep the vehicle a long time without major repairs is pretty high. If you buy a VW your chances are not so good..

They're great looking and fun to drive! They don't break your heart. They break your (now married) wallet.

I bought a used Jetta and have had it three years. I have never had a problem. I love it.

I've had four VWs in my driving life. Never again. Too many expensive repairs.

My VW was the biggest piece of shit ever, and I’ve owned many makes. I’m pro Toyota or Honda now, would rather buy a damn Kia than another VW. My Toyota Echo served me for almost 200,000 miles with no repairs other than maintenance (break pads, wipers, etc) and I cried over parting with it, but I needed a bigger car due to kids, so went with a Prius wagon. It’s been so great, just like my Echo was. My DH has a Honda Fit, which has been amazing as well.
