Ion here. Thanks. That link was helpful. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal and like it's overall best for community. Why are people flipping out?
Devil is in the details.
And there are a million ways to royally screw this up and not meet any of the every changing “goals” APS seems to have. Given APS’s track record of having an infinity for screwing thongs up, people are nervous.
Rightfully so. There is also a general sense of decline.
We don’t feel that at all. Some growing pains, but no “sense of decline”.

The reason it's a big deal for those of us who have kids there now is that we want to be able to walk to school and we don't want our kids and their friends split up. That's what I care about. The schools are basically the same. The education won't be any different, but my child will be switched for 5th grade, which is the last of the elem. years, and might be separated from his friends. It stinks, but it won't affect education.
APS as a whole is another matter. I have no clue why a school system with space issues has option schools or HB Woodlawn. It's time for them all to go, and everyone can go to their neighborhood school.

That said, we wouldn't be having these issues if Arlington wasn't the closest commute to DC and the pentagon and if traffic wasn’t getting worse every year.

That why there is a thread about why APS parents complain more than others. We just bought a house in Arlington in the school zone we like. I know it might change in a couple of years, but also re other two schools we might be re zoned to are also great schools. Kids are more resilient than the parents here. Well if for some reason they get seprated from a friend, organize play dates for God sake. I too don't get what the drama is about!
Half the drama is overreactions on the part of rich north Arlington parents fretting about six of one thing, half a dozen of the other. The rest of the angst is middle class (for Arlington, at least) who live in south Arlington and worry about being zoned for schools that are being turned into test cram academies for 1st gen ESP students.

Because it is best for the overall community. Welcome to Arlington.
