Not OP, but the idea is probably that he does it without being asked. To me, if you have to tell someone to declare their love for you, it.seems insincere when they do.

But I was raised in "stiff upper lip" circles. I have friends who become effusive during dinner toasts and Thanksgiving meals, etc. Makes me cringe every time.
