And his school - is he going and is it a small, supportive one?

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I work in a pediatric hospital and, although I don't work in PBMU, I do see quite a few patients in similar conditions (I am in cardiac unit, most kids similar to him that come to us are due to ingestion/suicide attempt. They need to be on cardiac observation for a while). I also have a daughter with HFA, ADHD and severe anxiety/depression. She has also expressed suicidal ideation before and my heart breaks every time I hear those words. She is younger than your son and so far has not made any attempts, but every day I fear we are inevitably headed that direction. So I see it from both sides. And I am so, so incredibly sorry you have to go through this and that your son has to go through this.

I am sorry, OP. This must be so scary. At the same time, it might be the safest place to get meds stabilized and work out your next steps. Huge hugs to you—hang in there.

OP, have you looked at NAMI resources? As a partner of a personw ith mental illness, I found their 12 week family to family education program very helpful. they also have support groups for the family members of those with mental illness.

Also, I know hospitalization is heartbreaking and scary, but try to remember that it an also be helpful.

What is the school situation like? Do you have support pieces in place so that school is supportive and not a contributing driver of illness?

Thank you. Things aren’t good. I suspect we are headed to hospitalization. Hoping his doctor has ideas that can stabilize him. Hoping but hard to be optimistic.
