You are exactly the type of person I hated meeting after graduating from Miami and moving to DC. And I don’t know a single person unaware of Oberlin.
You don’t know many people then.
I am from Ohio and am here now. Everyone knows about Oberlin. No one sends their kids there. Too much money for a ridiculous experience. Midwesteners are way more pragmatic and don't waste their money on those kinds of things.
Oberlin students are more than 90% out of state and foreign students. Oberlin reserves a certain number of fully funded seats for Oberlin HS students. This leaves relatively small number of seats for OH residents. Hence the anger and hostility among a certain segment of OH residents that's shut out from Oberlin.

Forbes ranks Oberlin #19 among liberal arts colleges in the US, a notch below Vassar and a notch above Barnard College of Columbia University.
The person I know who graduated from Barnard tells everyone that she graduated from Columbia. Tee hee.

Oberlin like most slac doesn't have an in-house engineering program. However, it has a transfer program with Cal Tech, Wash U, and Columbia. Cal Tech is not guaranteed but the latter two are - as long as students maintain 3.25 and 3.33 GPA respectively. So, Oberlin doesn't suck. A 3.33 GPA for a guananteed transfer to Columbia speaks for the quality of its program.

Miami grad here. Good school, but it has gone downhill since getting rid of the Western College Program (School of Interdisciplinary Studies) about a decade ago. That, the business school and the architecture program were main draws.
I wouldn’t let me kids go there today. Serious problems with sex assault and alcohol culture, moreso than most colleges.

OP: my kid applied to Miami as a safety. DC got into most of his schools, but picked Miami. He had high scores so he got a lot of merit aid. We will paying less than half of what we would have paid for in-state options (they are very good in-state schools and talked about here on DCUM). He was also admitted into the honors college and is excited about it. He will probably to grad school, and we feel good about his prospects.

OP: its a perfectly good school. Like most, its what your student makes of his experience. If he's a serious student, he will do great.

Oh yes. I'm hearing of more and more kids going there and very definitely the party atmosphere is certainly a big part of that draw. I guess in the end they all come out with he same diploma, but it sure is a lot of money to spend if the kid is not there to work.

I don’t know if Miami has a strong rep for engineering. It’s definitely a good school, I just don’t think engineering is a particular strength there. Have you looked at Case Western at all?

Not “quite” there yet? This second tier place has been trying hard for 30-plus years. It ain’t happening.

Miami has a great reputation for undergraduate teaching. USNWR always ranks it near the top along with Brown. Almost half the student body studies abroad at some point, and almost 40% are from out of state. Miami loves high stats kids and have given generous merit aid for high scores.
It’s not well ranked overall. Facts matter.
