Did you ever think that maybe some smart teachers have smart kids? And maybe teachers have a tendency to teach their kids to read early, take them to museums, and provide enriching activities while they grow up? Many kids of English teachers know how to write well, kids of math teachers are good at math, kids of science or history teachers know a lot of science or history. Kids of teachers get into magnet programs because they are well prepared, not because of special preference.

There's one (or used to, not sure if she is still there) RM GC who had her multiple kids accepted into IB program. Maybe her kids were particularly smart but I always wondered about if she "knew" something others didn't.

Actually, you do.

Anonymous wrote:Not the same issue, but I have teacher friends who have been unable to get COSAs to send their kid to the school where they teach. The principals I know who have made cosa requests have had better luck. I don’t actually think principals’ kids get preferential treatment for magnets, but I’m saying there’s no way that teachers do. We always get screwed.

Yup, this has happened at our school, too. We do have a couple of staff members who live in the neighborhood, though, and the principal asks them well before class lists are made up for the following year, which teacher they want their child to have and will put the kid in that class. But honestly, the requests of non-staff parents with specific preferences are also mostly honored, too, so it's not really special treatment.

I think staff gets preference for non-merit based programs, like the lottery for immersion.
