I desperately need a plan B. What car brand /model would you recommend that would have comparable size
and good safety features but would be reliable and safe?

Second this. On my second Q5 and love it!
I had a XC70 in the early 2000's and it was endless trouble. Blinker fuses would go. Check engine light all the time.
Final straw was the transmission system software(?) malfunction on a return trip from the beach and car stopped working every 20 min. or so. I'd sit, restart, and drive for another 20 min. Finally had to call a tow truck to return to this side of the Bay Bridge.

...but if you're turned off by probable maintenance issues with Volvo, BMW is just as bad, if not worse!

overreaction, it's still the best suv out there. google the brands and you can find even more.
We just got rid of one and it was an utter piece of crap. Constantly told me it needed software updates (even right after it went for service—every time). Brakes and tires wore out ridiculously early. The safety features were over sensitive and annoying—especially the car thinking you were going to run into something and slamming on the brakes for you. The engine had a problem and we took it for service and thereafter it was sluggish.

From the side? They have blind spot monitors anyway.
I have a 2011 Q5 without blind spot monitors but don't find the side view mirrors create any blind spots.

We have a Forester and like it, but I kinda wish we'd gotten the Outback. But yes, OP, Subaru all the way and I say that coming from an all-Volvo family.

BTW the Audi Q5 and Q7 are nice too but the side view mirrors seem oversized from the drivers seat. they seem to create blind spots in your field of view. just one reason we ended up crossing them off the list despite how much we liked the look and ride

Volvo XC90 is a much bigger vehicle than the subaru so I don't see those as comparable myself. We looked at the Volvo XC90 and ended up getting an MDX
