There is research that shows conservatives are more fearful and also that fear makes people more conservatives. conservatives sometime reject this idea perhaps because thet are afraid that social scientists are too biased.

It's not an insult, it's just the truth. And you can make similar spot-on generalizations about liberals/Democrats (many of whom, the higher you go up the socio-economic ladder, are rife with hypocrisy) but they didn't win the Presidency, so...

The tide of voters that brought the election to Trump (lower and lower-middle-class whites) were motivated by fear, uncertainty and doubt. They believe they're losing (or have already lost) their place in the world and have to play by rules that others don't. A blathering bullshitter played to those fears and his make-it-up-as-you-go-along bullshit had a refreshing feel of candor and, hilariously, 'honesty'(!) It wasn't honest (Trump is a liar's liar, someone who is deeply committed to the joy of lying and all it can bring him) but it sounded and felt honest (to people who wanted/needed some propping up) and that's often enough.
