All of you allowing your 11-year-old kids to be on Instagram are complete idiots.

Not to mention, you have NO IDEA that once you allow this app on their phones (for those of you who think you are savvy to approve their apps and retain their passwords to check...which you think means you are being so safe!)...they don't even USE that Instagram account that you approve of.

Before long, they have a FINSTA account in addition to the one their parents check. (That's "Fake Instagram" account) and that is where all the stuff is posted that you don't get to check, because you don't even know it exists!

13 IS TOO YOUNG FOR INSTAGRAM! Even INSTAGRAM asks you to verify that you are 13!

Yes. Folks that are on the Tweens and Teen forum are woefully ignorant of the realities of parenting a middle schooler. Facebook is not a thing--but Instagram for 11+ is absolutely common for all but the most insanely overcontrolling parent.

Mention to your child that you notice at least one of her friends is following someone with inappropriate content. Open conversation with her about what she would do if she encountered inappropriate content and use it as an opportunity to speak to her about your values and expectations. I wouldn’t worry about parenting someone else’s kid but rather use this as a jumping off point to teach your daughter since it’s obviously a real issue in her life.

OP, if I looked at my kid's phone and saw that he/she was looking at inappropriate pictures, based on my own definition of inappropriate, I would block those sites or at least have a talk about what sites were appropriate followed by some monitoring and consequences for violations of the rules. I don't know much about Instagram, but if following someone means that those same pictures that I find to be inappropriate come up in my kid's account, I would have them unfollow that person based on the same reasoning. I get to parent my own kid and decide what content is OK over electronic media, and this is just part of that.

Tell the parents and have DD unfollow the boy, OP. Plan how you will explain it to her but don't cave. Her friend is making choices that are not appropriate and are disrespectful toward girls.

You'll get the "boys will be boys, this stuff is normal" posts. Stick to what your gut tells you and have her drop him. Keep monitoring her accounts.

Consider ending Instagram. Sixth grade is too young -- both by Instagram age rules and by kids' maturity for handling social media. Ignore the "kids must have it or they're social pariahs" stuff you'll also hear here.

Have a conversation about the accounts her friend follows and why they’re inappropriate. Make sure she understands why acting that way on social media can be damaging. Ensure she knows not to participate in that kind of stuff.
