What bothers me about these "grand sweep" stories is that it is always a URM winning all eight and that because they applied to all 8 (with terrific GPA and scores, I get it), they are going to get in all 8. But that leaves seven other deserving students out there waitlisted. Out of the 8 Ivies, surely these students have a top one, two or three picks. So why apply to all eight for bragging rights? No, I'm not bitter as a PP said. I don't even have a student applying this year. I'm just reflecting on why some students feel they must do this. The whole point of SCEA and EDs were to make students pick the elite school they most wanted early on in the game, so that all 8 schools didn't have to review the same 50K applications. It's counterproductive when a student does this. Now she'll pick one and call or email the other seven to release a spot.

That Asian kid was probably labeled as a robot on DCUM while people singing praises for this girl.

He’s a great guy. Frighteningly smart, hard working, well rounded and a nice, decent person.
I don’t think that most people on DCUM have any idea what they are talking about most of the time so it really doesn’t matter what DCUM thinks.

The ND kid was first in his family to go to college as well, another hook.

And the Walls kid appears to be a Harvard legacy, given that it appears her mother attended (and possibly legacy for some other school, although they don't mention her father in the article).

This is Stanford's little shame. The bulk of its URM AA population are the children of AA or Black Stanford undergrads and grad schools. So they get to check off the URM box, the legacy box, and the "development" (go after parents for money) boxes. This is especially prevalent in the law school.

Apparently she’s smart and she worked hard and she gives back to her community. What’s not to like? She can only attend one of those schools, so acceptance doesn’t take away all those seats from others.

It’s not so much a question of merit as it is just chance/having a standout factor. There are more competitive/deserving students than there are spots at ivies.

Yeah hate to say but the ND kid was hooked due to geography I literally cannot imagine an unhooked kid getting into all 8 ivies. I once was sort of surprised that this normal-ish person I knew went to MIT. Guess what? Athlete.
