I do this with my mom and she simmers down. That's the right way to treat moms. Especially cranky old endlessly critical moms.

Yes. This exactly! Tell her is right... on anything she brings up. ANYTHING, fastest way to shut her up. I have some experience with this! Fastest and least stressful way for you, not her. Do this for your sanity.
