Well... as someone currently in a cast who can’t properly/safely take care of my rambunctious 2.5 year old, I wouldn’t be happy.

How much care does he need? If this is just a question of keeping him company while he watches TV and fetching snacks, a 13-year-old is more than capable enough of being in charge for a couple of hours.

Overreacting OP. If your son was sick all he was probably doing was lying in bed. A 13 year old, even with a foot in a cast, is capable of keeping an eye and if anything happens she can call her dad. Here’s your reality check since you asked for one.

Why? I let DH know if someone is caring for our child. Why should the other parent not be made aware of who is watching their own kid? I would never do this.

You're treating this like the kid was left at a stranger's house. The dad left his son in the house with his teenage daughter to go pick up his other daughter. This isn't a situation where mom needed to weigh in or be "made aware," it was a basic judgment call. Parents are allowed to make those, even if they have a penis.

How do you know she has never babysat before? Or are you assuming? Most 13 year old girls babysit.

When you say “sick” what do you mean? When is the last time he had a fever, and what was it? When did he last vomit?

Presumably your DH gave him meds and whatever else he needed and assumed he'd just watch tv or rest for 2.5 hours. Unless he was emergent and needed medical care, sick kids just mostly need comfort and rest.

As a parent, I don't know that I would have thought that this was something I needed to check in about.

You said you wanted a reality check. The reality is you're overreacting. Caring for a sick 4 year old is really simple even if you don't know the kid well (couch, blanket, disney movie, pedialyte), and if she was out of her depth she could call her dad.

He should've let you know, but you're overreacting. I babysat a neighbor's 2 year old at 13 while her parents went on movie dates.

A 14 year old most certainly can watch a 4 year old! Do you not like your step daughter, OP?

A 13 year old can watch a 4 year old but not fair to her that child is sick and she's in a cast.
