I grew up in an all white area and they showed us roots during BHM. When I made my first black friend in college, I would always call him chicken George when ever I got drunk. That is a pretty good reason to exspose kids to a more rounded history.

Only problem being I could see it under cutting some kids sense humanity. One can get numbed to smaller injustices when studying thousands of years of exploitation, Slavery, colonialism and brutality.

Our school had a lot of activities during black history month culminating in a potluck and performance dinner. There were field trips to African American museum and the civil war museum. The last week was spirit week with themes such as 1920s Harlem style, 80s hip Hop, African themed attire. That was a fun week. So yes it was quite an integral part of the month .

Having said that the school has also had a similar month on Hispanic culture with potluck and performances.

Finally they have a international day potluck also planned for later in the year.

All in all very diverse and inclusive

I of not think many ways of teaching black history ameliorates racism. Unless it is critical race theory, and really unpacking the legacy of racism. Maybe if the music teacher played "Strange Fruit" and discussed the history behind the song and how people try to coerce Billie Holiday from singing it. Or discussing cultural appropriation in music. But often you see kids get to do a report of MLK, Fredrick Douglas, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, George W. Carver, let the students pick out bio acts without critical analysis and call it a day.

I might have a few in my closet ready to go, but they're all Caucasian. They don't make the brown one any more. I don't make the serious Humpty kit any more. The most at once was six: four gold and platinum and two regular brown ones connected to glasses. These days I paint the nose the day of and sometimes even the hour of the show. I use Sharpies and different designs depending on where we're playing--I might put a Playboy bunny on the side if we're playing the Playboy Mansion, or I might put HH on the side like the Gucci logo, the double letters. I have a lot of fun with it now; I don't take it as serious as I used to with having a case with a variety of noses inside. I just stop at the costume shop or the party store of that city and get some Sharpies and fix it up. Sometimes I'll draw stripes, sometimes make it blue, or if it's a more serious show I'll go with acrylic paint and then a clear coating on it to lock it on.

But they don't even make 'em good any more. They used to make 'em connected to the stern Woody Allen-type glasses, but now it's the cheaper, bendy glasses. The slightest pull and the ear-thing pops off. So I buy 'em, tear the mustache off, pop the ear-strap, whatever, and rest it on my nose and put a real pair of glasses on to lock it to my face.

What happened to the gold and platinum noses?

I might have one of the four gold ones left in a drawer broken somewhere..."

DCPS still has some weird curricula. At my child's elementary school four years ago, they did a long unit on DC history and the treatment of Marion Barry would have given even the North Korean propaganda ministry pause. Maybe it was just the teacher, but it seemed that she was using some kind of curriculum guide.


DC history is part of the curriculum (just like every other state in the country has kids do a unit on state history), but I think that each school does it their own way.


Ha! i doubt if any school in the District teaches that Barry was an incompetent, tax-cheating crack addict who, in Mayor Williams' words, tried to fly DC into a hillside. Any teacher who would honestly teach that is likely to be fired at DCPS!
