While the microplane idea is intriguing, I don't like to skin my fingers. Also dangerous and PITA to clean it! I make an exception for the garlic press. Mine is stainless steel one from Williamson Sonoma.

This is not true. I have never skinned my fingers in 15 years and it cleans with a rinse or dishwasher.
You can grate hard cheeses, nuts, nutmeg, garlic, ginger, etc.

Seeing as I sliced off my fingertip using a mandolin, with the guard, I would totally skin my fingers with a microplane. I have this OXO garlic press and it works great. Cleans easily

Blade of a large knife. Smack that garlic hard! (put the garlic under the broad side of the blade and then use your other fist and bang down). Then use the bottom of the blade to chop the garlic. Does the trick. Much quicker and much easier to clean. Threw away all my garlic presses.

I have had a Zyliss for almost 30 years. I bought it in college when I was obsessed with the Frugal Gourmet.

I have an XO garlic press, but I've stopped using it.

I now use a handheld cheese grater (a trick from Rachael Ray). Super quick and easy to clean.

My favorite garlic press is actually the simple Ikea one.

But I have a few friends who rave about the Pampered Chef one - you can leave the garlic "skin" on it when you put it in.

tsk tsk.

The Microplane idea is good though I might be afraid if skinning my fingers.

Do it. No need to peel even. It doesn't pass through the microplane.
