Teens come and go way more than 8 year olds do. The 8 year old is at one place all day. And the parents know where that place is.
Not true, little kids sports, band practice, hanging out with friends, camp, field trips a lot of the same things teen do.
The parents know the schedule. They made it. The 8 year olds are not driving nor are they getting chauffeured by anyone but adults or older teens who have phones.
Teens are away from their parents for hours on end and go where they please. Some drive. They get rides with older friends. They use uber. Or the metro.
Eight year olds are not teens. Eight year olds don't NEED phones.
My child swims. Yes, some of the 5-6-7-8 year olds are getting dropped off at the pool and parents have been late as we've stayed with a few who have inconsiderate parents. Coaches have the next practice and don't supervise the kids. Staff at the pool are useless.

Its a boy. I would never leave him home alone nor does he want to stay along. We are traveling and together during the day. We keep a home phone but if child was alone at all, I would absolutely give them a phone. For the little cost, it gives me peace of mind. The phone isn't the issue. Its how they use the phone that is.
I don't have an issue getting him a smart phone. He doesn't have access to downloading apps so its not a big deal.
Will you somehow restrict his Safari use?

This is why it's a big deal. A decade ago nobody would think of getting an 8 year old a smart phone. Now it's somewhat common.
At this rate, many 6 year olds will have phones by 2025. And that's f-cked.
