Spanking is always abuse - but clearly not the only form of abuse. But make no mistake - causing your child physical pain on purpose - actually taking your hand to strike a child with the objective being to hurt that child - is most definitely abuse.

Reality is any punishment can make kids sneaky. We don't spank. Soap or hot sauce is very abusive. A swat - not the best parent moment but it will not cause lasting harm. Beating your child, will clearly harm.
No. Causing physical pain to a child is clearly different than a time out or another consequence. Even a few swats on the behind is making you a perpetrator to a child.
You are purposely causing a little kid pain. That cannot be explained or rationalized away. Do you kiss the boo-boos that you inflict?

Same, but my mom never did the dirty work. She would have my dad do it when he got home. But it definitely taught me to keep things from her and that's still true today.

No intelligent, compassionate adult can possible justify the "reasoning" that we should teach a child not to hit by hitting them.
