You do not need membership if you are shopping with one

Simply pay cash for anything over the value of the card

My office manager has a membership to buy sodas, water, kcups, and paper products for the office. Which means 30 of us are technically using the same membership. I think taking a friend for a one-off trip is fine.

It's not being snide to point out that memberships are sold by Costco for a reason. The reduced prices are intended for those who've paid a yearly membership fee.
