Hello, New Jersey!!! Why is every state school on the East Coast full of kids from there? WVU for example.


People in the Northeast usually look down on their local state schools, especially if it's not one of the top ranked state schools in the state. They'd rather pay twice as much to send the kids out of state or to a private.

We visited this year. Honestly I thought the campus was pretty and there have been some recent improvements but the town itself is pretty run down and depressing. My son did not like it very much and did not apply. However, it is worth considering if you are in MD. We live in VA.

This. The people I know from my DC area high school who went to Frostburg aren't exactly raking in the big bucks, but they all have solid careers and comfortable stable lives. DCUM would have you believe that anything less than a 7 figure HHI is a failure, but we all know that's not reality.

I believe these two school are very different in terms of the type of students they admit. Admitted 2017 class at Florida State had GPA of 4.0-4.5 and SAT of 1240-1360. Kids with those stats in MD are going to College Park, not Frostburg.

My cousins graduated from Frostburg in the 1990s. It has a "college town" vibe to me.

Neither of them are setting the world on fire, but they're both self-supporting, with families and good careers.

Towson is a pretty happening area. Lots of little restaurants, sweet movie theater, and a kick ass radio station.

I believe the kids uber to Baltimore night spots.

Frostburg is often used for students to get their two years of gen ed requirements done, and then students transfer to UMCP. I know that recently the engine school has started a program where they stream lectures from UMCP to Frostburg and students take the courses remotely, with TAs and lab support from Frostburg professors. You can get a College Park diploma while spending four years at Frostburg. For a B/C student who wants small classes and personal attention and who likes the outdoors (great hiking!) Frostburg may be a good fit.

If you don’t mind out of state, have you looked at Shippensburg in PA? I really like that school and campus and my stepson, a student whose grades ran the gamut from As to Cs, was accepted there. Ultimately he didn’t go there, but I wish he had!


I agree. Shippensburg along with other PA State schools seem to get overlooked.
