What are you talking about? In the five minutes it takes for someone to shoot up a school, you will somehow find out the news, run to the school, get a bunch of kids to leave their shelter-in-place on school grounds and go to your house? Stop jerking yourself off out loud.

As a parent (who's not a teacher) I think about this every day - my kids were babies when Sandy Hook occurred and now instead of thinking about it once a day, It's constant. I try really damned hard to make sure every adult at the school knows how much we respect and appreciate them because what a horrible, horrible thing that as a nation, we're okay with this.

I am a teacher and I also have a kid of my own down the hall in prek. Ever since she started school I have felt like a school shooting scenario is just beyond what I can fathom. I can't imagine dealing with my own room and knowing my child is down the hall. I don't think her mother should be sacrificed for anything but I do think that at the end of the day I couldn't not protect my students if it came down to that.

So true!!!!! If you want someone to treat your child as their own, you must treat them with respect. You never know a situation you might find yourself in, I strongly advise any person reading this board to treat teachers with respect as they are caring for your most precious item (YOUR CHILD)

Emailing the teacher that you are upset little Larlo did not get a cupcake when he was disrespectful all week and choosing to ignore the teacher's email's about his disrespect is one example I would not try to attempt to save little Larlo.

When I read emails from parents that are really unkind, as a teacher, I think about the fact I may be the person who could in a position to save a child's life, and you want to come at me over a cupcake or a worksheet?

Agree, with most posters. But my knee jerk reaction would be self preservation because I have a family with young children.

My husband retired from law enforcement in August. He's now driving a school bus (he likes to work). His orders are that if there is an active shooter on the bus, he is to walk toward the shooter and put himself between the shooter and the kids. Because he's former law enforcement and has dedicated his life to protecting others, he has no problem doing this, should he ever be in this situation. He's trained in hostage negotiation, and has been in many active shooter/hostage situations. As the wife of a retired officer, I am not selfish enough to think "What about my family?" When you marry a LEO, you know that every day there's a chance that he may not come home. If, on his new job, he has to take a bullet for children to save their lives, I will mourn him desperately, but I will be proud of what he did.

Im retired now, but I ran a billion scenarios to prepare over the years and they all focused on gathering the kids to safety. I taught children in wheelchairs and walkers, children with autism who can’t stand loud noise, and children who cannot follow verbal commands. In none of my imaginary situations (or my colleagues’) did the children get left in danger while we ran to safety. The truth is, as the adults in this situation, if we focused on ourselves, we could possibly save ourselves by hiding better and faster than children. But we wouldn’t.

I was at my kid’s school one day when there was a lockdown drill. I ended up in a large closet with about 20 kids and a teacher. I was closest to the door, which was locked and had a window shade down. Obviously it was just a drill, but I felt strongly that I needed to be between the kids and the door. I think most parents would. Teachers too.

I agree that the parents create some of these monsters and should be charged. It should be a judgment call to be decided on a case by case basis. This is why it should be decided by impartial, non-elected, federal judges. All school shooting cases should get a new designation as specialty federal cases that are decided by a panel of expert federal judges.

We need a radical revamping of the gun culture in the US to protect children and the heroes that teach them.

I think this is one of those questions that cannot be answered unless tested. I think most teachers would put protecting the kids first--I don't think they necessarily looked at it as "taking a bullet" --though, sadly, that was the result in some cases.
